Conversion between ruleset question
I am wondering what is allowable for offering mainly adventure conversions from one system to another.
For me, I am interested in doing conversions of 1E/2E adventures to PFrpg/3.5. I did it in house for 1 adventure but I KNOW it can't be shared as I modified the 2e Module itself, so major Copyright issues beyond my personal table.
What I was wondering is, could I take say Castle Amber which I own in FG and create a Mod that links to the original 2e adventure for all text and map content but creates new system friendly encounters and parcels (I think that really about all that needs changed).
I know that universal mod extension would need to be used so the 2e adventure could be loaded alongside the mod. But I am unsure if the original map could be made to link to the new encounters and such. so potential buyers would need to own the original adventure, load universal mod & own the conversion mod for it to work.
What If I redid the map in dungeon alchemist, Same map but completely made from scratch in DA. then I could add the pins and have them use that map instead.
ultimately I guess the simple questions are:
1 Are conversions allowed?
2 can the creator charge for them?
3 if so, would it be a store or a Forge situation (or DMsGuild)?
4 can maps be created for the conversion that are the same but made new?Last edited by Morenu; February 18th, 2025 at 21:42.

There are some works like this on DMsGuild, where they converted a module to 5e, it only contained the information on the changes, nothing from the original work, just Room 1) 4 goblins, trap dex save 12, et al. Really not sure about the legalities of publishing it anywhere though as you are taking a WotC owned IP and converting it potentially for another competitor (Paizo) (yes I get the 3rd Edition portion, would really depend on what you were including it in there). DMsGuild was originally only for 5th Edition things, so would need someone more familiar with the situtation (even though owned by the same company One Book Shelf [OBS] and then bought by Roll20 it might be able to be published on DriveThruRPG, but it gets mirky).

yeah I know it can be murky, and honestly, I am doing the conversions slowly for our group and with a little extra effort I thought I MIGHT be able to share them. charging money is not a requirement for me, I just thought it might get others inclined to do it as well.
But ultimately, I assume its on SW to answer this question as I would be looking to share it here (not real interested in DMsguild and such). I would imagine they would have some idea or be able to find out if they were interested.
to me since to use the conversion, the buyer would have to buy the original module or own it and bring it in themselves, it would probably make additional sales not lose them.My First Mod PFRPG - Feats Extended, focusing on PF1e Feats and Racial Traits automation. The reason DMsGuild comes up, is it was the only allowed place for 5E content to be published legally per WotC, if it was using any 5E IP, it had to go there. But you're 100% right, SW can give you a bit of direction with it.

Note, one thing that will in this case impact the situation is if you are charging for it or not. Usually IP law doesn't care about commercialization or profit, but the Wizard's Fan Content Policy does and may allow you to release it here with certain restrictions.
