Spell Attack with Advantage - How to?
Hi, how can I make a spell like SLEEP automatically have advantage on all SLEEP attack rolls?
EDIT:
I found in a rather long gameplay that by using the effect: ADVSPELLCAST; [ROLL]; [SELF], it was possible to achieve this in a semi-automated way.
Is this the correct and optimal method?
I think it would be useful to include specific instructions for Shadowdark in a section of the module, detailing effects like ADVSPELLCAST and SPELLCAST. It would also be helpful to include other system-specific effects for Shadowdark if they exist. These effects are also not listed here:

ADVSPELLCAST; [ROLL]; [SELF]
This is correct. There is no way to fully automate advantage or bonuses for specific spells or talents.
Most of the 5E effects work with Shadowdark. The exception being any effects dealing directly with skills, as there are no skills in Shadowdark.
The only fully automated advantage for a "talent" is the dwarven ancestral ability that applies advantage to the hit die when rolling for hit points. That is hardcoded based on race selection. I wish it had been hardcoded based on the ancestral ability name instead (I want to make a version of the game where there are only Humans but they have access to most of the other ancestral abilities, either player choice or random roll). I've been thinking about making a personal extension to change that, but I don't have the experience to pull it off quickly. I have been able to locate the obvious files and functions that handle that automation, but I'm not sure of the correct way to override the defaults, or if there are other files and/or functions that would need to be updated. My most recent experience in "coding" was making cheats for EU4 and Stellaris, lol. I did mess around with the toolsets for NWN2 (many years ago) and Skyrim (not as many years ago as NWN2) so I have an idea of what to do, just not the confidence to pull it off.

Explain what you mean based on ancestral ability?

The only condition spelled out in the book is Blind. It is automated. The rest the book actually says use common sense (pg. 85) Although I do believe my common sense is superior (due to my great intellect, good looks and six pack abs), inevitably people would complain if I made judgements. Thus I added the adv/disadv button on the desktop for you to use.
My advice to you is make the player remember to use adv or disadv and understand their character. The player can use the buttons on any roll. If you spend too much time fiddling with effects it will bog down your game. Perhaps I will make a sticky post detailing deviations from the 5e wiki as that criticism is more than fair.Last edited by bayne7400; February 13th, 2025 at 14:40.
