Certain links not usable

One of my players was having this issue last night with a spell from Xanathar's. I didn't actually look, but I think it may be that the spells are not in the player version of Xanathar's, only the DM version.

All of the new spells that appear in Xanathar are in both the DM and players module. Make sure that you have only shared the players version of the module and that only that module was used to create the character. If the DM version was used to create the character then the player won't be able to use the spell.

Additional Ranger Spells (Optional) are not in Xanathar's but in Tasha's. Does the player have Tasha's open and did they create the character using drag and drop?

Yes, and Yes - you are right its the Tashas- both avialable and free to use for players and DM version.
I drag and dropped the link of the Tashas Rangers optional spells again to the not functional link above. Thereafter the window opnes with the link but only a windowframe without the spells inside will be shown. I think its the same bug as already fixed in the middle of the thread- something changed the code back.

I'm unable to reproduce this.

What I did was share the PHB and Tasha players and then join my own game. I then dragged in two levels of Ranger into a new character. I go to the abilities tab and click on Additional Ranger Spells (Optional) and then click on the Additional Ranger Spells link. This opens the relevant spell list.

So what am I doing differently from what you did? And can you replicate the problem following the same steps I took above?

Our characters are level 5 - we dragged the ranger 5 times from the own class window, after creating it similar then you have done (main char sheet next to class & level use manifying glass to open own class and then dragging that class window back to own character sheet class/level line).
We used on lvl3 the subclass of ranger: the gloom walker (Xanathars) and drakewarden (Fizbans treasury of dragons).

By the way it seemd, that my character has lost a lot of links- the specialisation link for the ranger class is only opening a "new class" window"- same as the own class window after opening the own class with the magnifying glass- how can I repair these links?

I was able to repair my bugged links in dragging the special windows again on my character - open it and dragging the correct link to the areas on the char.
Don´t understand why they lost the links at all- at the start most of the books were not free to the players because of several updates.
But making them aloowed to the players that has not repaired the lost links.

I'm still unable to replicate this.

So just to be clear. I started a new character as a player with the PHB, Tasha's Players and Xanathar Players open. I dragged the ranger class from the Tasha's link in the class list 5 times, selecting the Gloom Stalker archetype at level three. I then go to the abilities tab and open spellcasting and additional spells and then click on the links inside of those to open the spell lists.

I also tried creating a Ranger not using Tasha's and then dragged in the additional ranger spells ability from the Tasha Ranger abilities list; and again this worked.

So all of this I did as a player and only using the players versions of the books in question.

Are you able to replicate this issue doing exactly what I did; it's possible that because I am joining my own game rather than having a player connected normally that I'm not seeing the issue.

My understanding was that you were creating these characters from scratch today. If the characters have been created a while ago (that is before the linking was fixed) then the links will probably not work since they were created before the patch. And if they were created a long while ago probably before even Tasha's was updated to fall in line with the new way of creating spell lists.

No, they were older chars we used 6 month ago the last time- I created them from scratch now and had also no problem similar as you. It seems, that the link loss happened through several updates since january 2024.
So I drag and dropped the links one after another to the char and it is now usable again. The main problem seems to be that the links were lost trough several updates.

How about exporting the characters and uploading them here? That way others can look at the xml and see if we can reproduce and identify the issue.
