How to transfer an exisiting FG unigame file from an old computer too a new computer?
I already installed fantasy grounds unity on the new computer and found the license key.
All set except the game in progress files. I want to move them over to the new computer.
How is this done the proper way. So as to not mess up the game or fantasy grounds program.
I am aware it is not intuitive and I can mess this up, if i do not do it right.
Searched for this info and did not find it.
It should be a sticky.
But anyway looking for help from the pros.

With FG shut down on both computers, copy the "campaign" folder that is found in your FG Data directory (can be found via the folder icon in the FG launch screen) from one computer to the other.

Well I got FG unity from steam.
My directory looks like this.
drive D >steam > steamapps > common > FGunity
No data file located in FGunity.
Where does a steam game keep its data files?
I can not find the FG data directory.
ok I found it under drive c > users > my computer name > appdata > roaming > smiteworks > FG unity > campaigns
Now I have another issue, those directories and path ways do not yet exist on my new computer.
As I have not created a campaign yet on my new computer. And some of this is steams doing not FG.
So I assume I have to create a campaign first on my new computer to generate the path ways and file structure.
After the structure exists then copy the campaigns over from the old computer to the new into the campaign folder on the new computer, where ever steam decides to put it on the new computer.
Does this sound correct?Last edited by hammer58; December 7th, 2024 at 05:40.

On the FG Splash Screen click the folder icon and it will open to your Data directory.

On the FG Splash Screen click the folder icon and it will open to your Data directory.
Copy \campaigns folder (the whole thing) from one to the other.

You are probably not seeing that location because AppData is a hidden folder by default on windows. On any window click on the View menu option at the top and tick 'Show hidden folders' to make it visible. But as damned says clicking on the folder icon top left of the start screen will take you to the FG Data folder.
If there is something that you would like to see in Fantasy Grounds that isn't currently part of the software or if there is something you think would improve a ruleset then add your idea here https://www.fantasygrounds.com/featu...rerequests.php

Ok I managed to do this.
The method used was to install 7 zip on both computers.
Zip the campaign game I wanted to move.
Attach the zip file to an email.
Email it to myself.
Unzip the file on the new computer.
Move the file to the proper location in the campaign folder in the new computer.
I was not able to just move the file from one computer to the other.
Networking issues I do not understand.
In the old days, I would have burned the files to a cd and copied them over to the new computer on a cd.
Neither of my laptops have a cd drive. I could have bought a usb cd drive for this purpose.
But 7zip worked well enough and was free.
Another issue I had was using windows 11 architecture.
I am not familiar at all on how to use win 11.
As a side note, Computers are supposed to make peoples lives easier.
However this entire process took me 27 hours to accomplish.
Back in days of dos, I could have done this in less than 1 hour.
But new modern win 10 and win 11 add layers of difficulty and huge time investment to accomplish this task today.
This is directed at Microsoft thanks guys for making life harder.
I suppose someone with Microsoft networking training could do this way faster today.
All that means to me is it creates a new job title for something I used to be able to do myself.
And still can with work arounds.Last edited by hammer58; December 7th, 2024 at 13:35.

I've rarely needed to do it but right clicking on a folder and selecting Give access to > Specific People > Everyone and click share should share the file on your local network and be accessible to any other computer that's connected to that network. You could also use Dropbox, or One Drive or any other file sharing application; as well as you say a pen drive or other such device (maybe even Bluetooth).
I have an external hard drive that I back up my campaigns and other important data to and use that to transfer that data to a new computer when I occasionally buy one.If there is something that you would like to see in Fantasy Grounds that isn't currently part of the software or if there is something you think would improve a ruleset then add your idea here https://www.fantasygrounds.com/featu...rerequests.php

I do not consider one drive to be safe enough to use. Consider some 40 billion computer devices are connected to the internet daily.
Why would a hacker target one of those 40 billion devices when the vast bulk of them already have all their important files in one location such as one drive.
How often do you get notified that some company was hacked and your sensitive data has been breached?
Why would I pay some one else for this opportunity to be hacked? This file transfer I did would have been the only time to date that one drive would have been useful to me.
It would have saved me time on this one occasion. Not worth the exposure.
